Concept Logistics Strategy for Battersea Power Station

The challenge

An iconic structure, Battersea Power Station and its surrounding area are being regenerated through a multi-phased development project that is bringing new homes, offices, shops, restaurants, bars and open space to Wandsworth, South London. The seven phases commenced with a commercial and residential property and is progressing on to the development of the main power station building as well as new complexes.

Given the scale and complexity of the site with a number of projects running concurrently and phases dovetailing into each other, the development company responsible for transforming the site wished to consider the concept of a co-ordinated and integrated logistics strategy. They asked a team of Jacobs & o&i consulting logistics consultants for expert support in creating a centralised Logistics Strategy for this major programme.

Our role

With significant experience in developing logistics strategies for major construction programmes, the o&i consulting / Jacobs team recommended a structured and managed approach to programme wide logistics.

It was important to develop a logistics operating concept that provided realistic projections for the demand created by people and vehicle movements across a scheme of this size with so many projects taking place simultaneously. Our team mapped out how the overall concept can work for the multiple phases and advised on individual features that are central to the success of the concept, including a robust booking system, logistics requirements, and the location and size of on- and off-site logistics points and support facilities. We demonstrated how a structured and planned delivery process would enable the contractor to maintain a controlled logistics operation despite the complexity of the project. The identification of key project risks and appropriate mitigations were also part of our remit.

Overall, our team provided the client with a recommended strategic project approach to deliver the multi-phased programme effectively while maintaining a satisfactory overall experience for all contractors and existing occupants.
