The challenge
o&i consulting provided Goods-In Waste-Away (GIWA) design support and expert advice during the RIBA 2 and 3 phases of the Stansted Transformation Programme (STP) in 2018/19, before it was halted due to the pandemic.
With the gradual recovery of passenger traffic, the terminal development project resumed with some changes to the original scope.
In order to increase capacity, Stansted Airport intends to extend its existing terminal to enhance departure, immigration, arrivals, security and check-in facilities, as well as providing improved connectivity to satellites by Skylinks.
The airport company and its partners revisited RIBA 2 designs to accommodate these requirements.
With infrastructure developments leading to fundamental changes to all the primary, support and logistics flows through the airport terminals, o&i consulting was commissioned to review the revised RIBA 2 designs from a GIWA perspective, and subsequently provide input and support into the RIBA 3 designs.
Our role
Providing GIWA specialist advice and operations design support, o&i consulting ensured the client received an independent, objective and evidence-based assessment of RIBA 2 designs for the Stansted Airport Terminal Development Programme. As part of our evaluation of the terminal plans, we verified the operational viability of the design and identified issues, requirements and risks related to the GIWA infrastructure.
Moving on to the RIBA 3 phase, our team provided a set of GIWA design requirements for the airport developments. We identified options and developed solutions to resolve any issues highlighted in the RIBA 2 review, ensuring key factors such as sustainability, Health and Safety, security and service were considered throughout. Our solutions included strategies to reduce movement times, increase storage capacity, and improve lift utilisation and facility accessibility.
Where o&i consulting recommended changes to the designs, we quantified the benefits to allow the airport to complete an impact assessment. Our team developed a high level Concept of Operations to accompany the proposed RIBA 3 solutions.
Additionally, to ensure cohesion and consistency across all new and existing airport facilities, o&i consulting conducted a holistic, comprehensive site wide review of Stansted’s existing GIWA operations, assessing all critical logistical and support structures and processes and aligning them to meet passenger growth plans for the airport.
The Outcome
By integrating these recommendations into facilities designs – and existing infrastructure where relevant - the client would be able to increase the operational efficiency of the GIWA operations. This would ensure GIWA infrastructure and facilities were better aligned with goods and waste flows as well as other business-as-usual airport operations.
