o&i consultant experience: OLYMPIC GAMES LOGISTICS

arrivals and departures logistics advice, planning, implementation and management for Athens Olympic Games 2004

Athens International Airport required assistance in preparing its operations to handle the expected high increase in passenger and baggage demand created by Olympic Games traffic, culminating with 43,000 passengers and 60,000 bags on the peak departure day.

An effective off-airport processing concept, designed to transfer departing members of the Olympic Family and their baggage from the Olympic village to the airport, was a key element for smooth peak day operations.

Methodology and Solution

Airport operations planning and modelling including resource planning

Airport arrivals and departures process improvement

Queue design and management

Contingency planning and testing

Logistics operations design for the off-airport processing concept

Operations management:

An o&i consultant managed the off-airport processing of Olympic Family passengers and baggage for the peak departure period. This involved check-in the day before departure; baggage collection, transportation and security screening; scheduling and managing the transfer of Olympic Family members from the Olympic village to the airport.

Benefits

The airport achieved effective operations and efficient passenger and baggage handling, and continued to provide good customer service throughout the peak period.
